Afghans represent one of the largest refugee populations globally, with majority of the refugees live in countries, such as Pakistan, Iran, Tajikistan, and Turkey. According to data from the International Organization for Migration, nearly 3.6 million Afghans left the country between 2021 and 2022 due to a humanitarian crisis, with the majority seeking refuge in neighboring countries.
The Afghan crisis remains one of the largest and most urgent in the world. Since the Taliban’s return to power, over 55,000 Afghan nationals have resettled in Canada, with more than 52% settling in Ontario. Many are without organizational support. Afghan newcomers are hardworking and family-oriented—and they need an organization that understands them, speaks their language, and can help them integrate successfully.
There are more than 6.4 million Afghan refugees globally, according to the UNHCR, with over 4.5 million in Iran and 2.8 million in Pakistan. Many are at risk of deportation back to Afghanistan, where they face persecution or death. In 2023, Pakistan’s government initiated a plan to expel over a million undocumented individuals, primarily Afghans—despite UNHCR's non-return advisory.
